Relief to Adani's US$3 billion Dharavi project
In the election results, the BJP and its ally Shiv Sena and the factions led by Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party have won more than three-fourths of the 288 seats in the Maharashtra Assembly, after which these concerns have now been dispelled. Are. Adani plans to transform the magnificent 620-acre land, about three-fourths the size of New York's Central Park, into a spectacular urban center. Nearly seven lakh people living in dilapidated slums with open sewers and shared toilets in the densely populated slums located near Mumbai's international airport are to be given free flats of up to 350 square feet.
The redevelopment had become a political issue, as the opposition alleged that the group received undue favors from the state government in awarding the contract. The group has denied benefiting from government bias. Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had repeatedly raised the prize money for the Dharavi redevelopment, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party BJP of favoring cronies like Adani. Supporters of the project in the ruling party say the project promises to make it a global model for slum redevelopment. Dharavi is home to an estimated 1 million (10 lakh) people, but approximately 7,00,000 are considered eligible because the definition of resident requires proof of living in the area before January 1, 2000.
The rest would find homes in other parts of the city, a proposal opposed by some locals because they did not want any residents or business owners to be uprooted. Adani had won the contract to rehabilitate the slum over seven years through 2022, which is located on prime real estate in the congested financial capital. Weeks before the voting, the Maharashtra government had approved the acquisition of 256 acres of salt-pan land for Dharavi redevelopment. The salt-pan land is to be acquired from the central government and leased to the Maharashtra government, which is redeveloping the 620-acre slum, Asia's largest. Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd, in which the Adani Group holds 80 per cent stake, is implementing the project in collaboration with the state government. This land will be used to build low-cost and affordable housing for the residents of Dharavi.
Existing residents and businesses are being surveyed to determine who will be resettled or relocated in Dharavi. The slums that form the main backdrop of the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire are slums where eight people often live in a 100-square-foot house and ten times that number share one toilet. Dharavi is also a hotbed of small-scale businesses ranging from leather goods to pottery and clothing. The Maharashtra government issued a new tender for the redevelopment of Dharavi in 2022 after an earlier redevelopment deal was cancelled. Adani Group, which also runs Mumbai's airport and distributes electricity in the city, had won the project by paying Rs 5,070 crore in 2022 – 2.5 times more than the amount quoted by the next highest bidder – for the repurposed Dharavi. To provide houses with kitchens and toilets to slum dwellers.
