Hooliganism in Bangladesh at the instigation of Mohammad Yunus? Remove journalist Nazneen Munni otherwise we will blow up the entire TV channel.
New Delhi. Media freedom continues to be under attack in Bangladesh. The country’s leading private TV channel Global TV Bangladesh has been threatened with fire. After this, deep concern has spread in the journalist community. This incident has come to light at a time when a few days ago the offices of two big newspapers of the country, Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, were attacked and set ablaze by a mob. It is alleged that the youth warned that if Munni was not removed from the post, the channel’s office would also be burnt in the same way as happened recently with Prothom Alo and Daily Star. Nazneen Munni said in her Facebook post that she was not present in the office at the time of the incident. According to him, at around 8 pm, seven-eight youths met the channel’s managing director Ahmed Hussain. First he objected to Global TV’s coverage which showed the news of the death of Inquilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Usman Hadi.

On December 21, a group of youth reached the office of Global TV located in Tejgaon area of Dhaka. The group described itself as belonging to the ‘Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’ and demanded the removal of the channel’s head of news Nazneen Munni. According to Munni, the youth asked the managing director to give a written assurance of removing him within 48 hours. When they refused, the group allegedly repeated their threat to set them on fire. After the incident, the channel management advised Nazneen Munni not to come to the office for a few days and remain calm. But Munni came forward publicly and said that it is not possible to remain silent now. He says that this is an organized attempt not only against him but to intimidate the entire media.
Rifat Rashid, central president of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, admitted that a member of the organization’s city committee had gone to Global TV without permission, Prothom Alo reported. He claimed that the organization does not support any kind of violence or intimidation and a show-cause notice has been issued to the member concerned.
Nazneen Munni, a Global TV journalist and popular anchor of Bangladesh, supported the students’ movement in July-August last year. He had done dozens of TV shows and written dozens of posts on social media in support of the students. But now he himself is the target of the unruly disciples of Mohammad Yunus, because he has started writing the truth. Nazneen Munni says several journalists have received threats in recent months, including Jamuna TV editor Roxana Anjuman Nicol. They allege that influential voices in the media are being targeted one by one so that critical reporting can be silenced.
