Renowned litterateur Vinod Kumar Shukla passes away, PM Modi expresses grief

Raipur, 23 December. Renowned litterateur Vinod Kumar Shukla, honored with the Bharatiya Jnanpith Award, died here on Tuesday evening. He was 89 years old. His son Shashwat Shukla gave this information.

Shashwat Shukla told that his father was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Raipur on December 2 after he had trouble breathing. He breathed his last at 4.48 pm today. Shukla is survived by his wife, son Shashwat and a daughter. Shashwat told that information regarding his father’s last rites will be given soon.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolence on the demise of Vinod Kumar Shukla. PM Modi wrote in his ex-post, ‘I am deeply saddened by the demise of renowned writer Vinod Kumar Shukla, who was awarded the Jnanpith Award. He will always be remembered for his invaluable contribution to the world of Hindi literature. My thoughts are with his family and fans in this hour of mourning. Om Shanti.’

Earlier in the month of October, Vinod Shukla was admitted to a private hospital in Raipur after facing difficulty in breathing. After his health improved, he was discharged from the hospital, since then he was undergoing treatment at home. When Prime Minister Modi visited Chhattisgarh on November 1, he spoke to Shukla and his family and inquired about their health and well-being.

Vinod Kumar Shukla, the author of novels like ‘Naukar Ki Kameez’, ‘Khilega To Dekhen’, ‘Deewar Mein Ek Khirki Rehti Thi’ and ‘Ek Chuppi Jahag’, was honored with the 59th Jnanpith Award. On November 21, Shukla was given the Jnanpith Award in a function organized at his Raipur residence.

Vinod Kumar Shukla, born on January 1, 1937 in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, was a writer of Hindi literature who spoke very slowly, but his voice was heard far and wide in the world of literature. By giving words to the middle class, ordinary and almost unseen life, he has created a completely different kind of sensitive and magical world in Hindi.

His first poetry collection ‘Chrimp Jai Hind’ came in 1971 and from there his distinctive linguistic structure, silence and deep inner soft feelings started being recorded in Hindi poetry. His novel ‘Naukar Ki Kameez’ (1979) gave a new turn to Hindi fiction, on which Mani Kaul has also made a film.

Apart from Jnanpith, he was honored with many awards.

Apart from the Jnanpith Award, Shukla was also honored with awards like Sahitya Akademi Award, Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh Fellowship, Raza Award, Shikhar Samman, National Maithili Sharan Gupt Samman, Dayawati Modi Kavi Shekhar Samman, Hindi Gaurav Samman and Pan-Nabokov in 2023.
