Those who repeatedly break traffic rules are no longer in trouble, the government is bringing in a graded driving license system.
PM Relief Scheme: Carelessness on the road can prove costly now. To promote responsible driving and curb the increasing road accidents, the central government is soon preparing to implement grade based driving license system. Under this new system, points will be deducted for violation of traffic rules and if all the points are exhausted, the license can be suspended or even cancelled.
1.8 lakh deaths every year, a matter of great concern
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, while addressing the National Conclave on Road Safety organized by CII in the national capital, said that every year around 5 lakh road accidents take place in the country and around 1.8 lakh people lose their lives. He said that driving using mobile phones, over speeding, driving in the wrong direction and drinking and driving are the main causes of accidents. Gadkari said that people’s lives are very precious and the government is taking many steps for road safety.
What is graded point system?
The minister clearly said, “We are bringing a graded point system in driving licenses,” In this system, some points will be deducted from the driver’s license for breaking traffic rules. If all points are exhausted, the offender’s license may be suspended for six months. Repeated mistakes may result in the license being cancelled. He also said, “We are going to launch the scheme soon.”
Young people suffer the most
According to statistics, 72 percent of deaths occur in the age group of 18 to 45 years. Deaths of 10,119 children below 18 years of age have also been recorded in road accidents.

- 14,466 deaths due to not wearing seat belts
- 1.2 lakh deaths due to over speeding
Apart from this, wrong side driving, drunk driving and use of mobile are also major reasons.

Free treatment facility: PM RAHAT scheme
The minister appealed to the people to help the accident victims and not be afraid of medical expenses or legal process. Under PM RAHAT Scheme (Road Accident Victim Hospitalisation and Assured Treatment), a road accident victim will get cashless treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh for 7 days, irrespective of the category of road in which the accident occurred. This step of the government gives a strong message regarding road safety. Now the price of negligence may have to be paid not only through challan but also up to the cancellation of the license.
