Report makes MASSIVE claim regarding Rohit Sharma retiring after Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25
A report by PTI has stated that there are possibilities of Rohit Sharma retiring from Test cricket after the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy comes to an end.
Indian Test captain Rohit Sharma has failed to post a big score yet again as he got dismissed for just 3 runs on Day 2 of the 4th Test against Australia on December 27. It was another disappointing outing from Rohit as he has scored just 22 runs in the last 4 innings. This series of dismal performances has resulted in a lot of discussions regarding his future.
A report by PTI has stated that it is possible that Rohit might retire from the format after the ongoing series comes to an end. According to the report, chief selector Ajit Agarkar is in Melbourne as of now, and there are chances that they will have a conversation about Rohit’s future.
The report also claims the popular belief of Rohit retiring from Test cricket if India fails to reach World Test Championship (WTC) finals. With the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 levelled at 1-1, the last two matches hold massive significance for India and their dream of WTC finals.
Sunil Gavaskar has also raised concerns over Rohit’s weakening reflexes, suggesting that age might be acting up for the Indian skipper as he got dismissed for a low score in the Boxing-Day Test as well. Gavaskar put light on the footwork of the 37-year-old, which is something that has become more evident during his struggles in the ongoing BGT.
“That’s a shot that he normally plays. The half-pull off the front foot. I think he probably got in two minds whether to go for the proper pull shot or not and then ended up just trying to tap it like catching practice. But that’s what happens when you have a gap, when you’re 36, 37 years old and you have a long gap between playing cricket,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports on Rohit’s dismissal.
Rohit’s decision to go back to the opening slot in the fourth Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy failed to bring out results, as he partnered with Yashasvi Jaiswal but failed to perform well.
