Revolt in Odisha Congress, why is Sophia Firdous most talked about?

BJP candidates dominated the Rajya Sabha elections held on Monday. Of the 37 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in the country, 26 candidates had already won unopposed. Elections were held for the remaining 11 seats, out of which 9 seats were won by BJP and only three seats were won by the opposition. These elections were held in Haryana, Bihar and Odisha. Congress won two seats and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) won one seat.

 

Out of 4 seats in Odisha, 3 NDA and 1 BJD candidate won. Out of the two seats in Haryana, BJP won one and Congress won one. Meanwhile, be it Congress, RJD or BJD, all MLAs cross-voted in support of NDA. The name of Congress MLA Sophia Firdous from Barabati-Cuttack seat of Odisha is also included in this. Congress is shocked by this step of Sofia.

First Muslim woman MLA

Sophia Firdous is the first Muslim woman MLA to be elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly. Firdous defeated BJP’s Purna Chandra Mohapatra by a margin of 8,001 votes. In such a situation, let us know who is Sophia Firdous, who shocked her own party Congress?

Who is Sophia Firdous?

  • Sophia Firdous is a 34 year old youth leader. She belongs to a political family. Sophia is the daughter of senior Congress leader Mohammad Mokim. Congress gave Firdaus the ticket for the 2024 Odisha Assembly elections in place of his father Mokim. She had won the election by a huge margin of votes.
  • Sophia Firdous has studied civil engineering from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology. He also completed the Executive General Management Program course from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore in 2022.
  • Sophia was elected President of the Bhubaneswar chapter of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Associations of India (CREDAI) in 2023. She also works as the Eastern Zone Coordinator for CREDAI Women’s Wing.
  • Sophia is married to businessman Sheikh Meraj Ul Haq. She is following the footsteps of Nandini Satpathy, the first woman Chief Minister of Odisha. Nandini Satpathy was elected MLA in 1972.

BJP in Odisha

Let us tell you that in the 2024 Odisha Assembly elections, BJP had achieved majority by winning 78 out of 147 seats. In this election, the then Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was defeated and the 24-year rule of Biju Janata Dal came to an end. Even in the Lok Sabha elections, BJP had won 20 out of 21 seats in Odisha.
