Rick and Morty Season 9: Release date predictions, cast updates and plot details – Everything we know so far

The Rick & Morty animated television series is still the most anticipated adult animated series, having produced some of the wildest multiverse, dark humour, and family dysfunction through its two main characters, alcoholic genius scientist Rick Sanchez, and his deeply anxious grandson Morty Smith. Fans now await Season 9, which will deliver more sci-fi craziness, character emotion, absurd generational comparisons, and outrageous inventions told in the show’s irreverent style, following the emotional lows and multiverse highs seen in Season 8, both in 2025.

The Adult Swim animated sci-fi powerhouse has been renewed through Season 12; hence, Season 9 is now in post-production to fulfill its role as the next great entry into this long-running series (Jul. 2017); however, there is as of yet no confirmed premiere date.

However, several production clues point to a Fall 2026 premiere to occur sometime between September and December. For example, during the September 2025 update from Executive Producer Steve Levy and Showrunner Scott Marder via a Reddit AMA, they confirmed that Season 9 was deep in post-production.

Thus, by mid-2025, the animation was already in colour or very close to being finished (final post-production). By February 2026, a clip (which displays that the season is progressing at an acceptable level) was released on YouTube.

Just to give you an idea of how Seasons 8 and 9 compare to one another, Season 8 first aired in May 2025 and aired until July. Therefore, if you apply all these patterns of scheduling to charity schedule dates for all announcements (both date-wise & trailer) to mid-2026.

In addition, Seasons 10 & 11 are also in production, which gives the impression that production has been and continues to be ahead of broadcasting.

Rick and Morty Season 9: Voice Cast Update

The core memeners remains intact following the post-Season 6 recast:

• Sarah Chalke as Beth Smith and Space Beth
• Chris Parnell as Jerry Smith
• Spencer Grammer as Summer Smith

Returning cast includes co-creator Dan Harmon (Bird Person) and veteran voice actor Tom Kenny in various roles.

Recording reportedly wrapped for most principal cast members by mid-2025.

Rick and Morty Season 9: Plot Details

As in earlier seasons, there are tight restrictions on the exact details of episodes being released.

High-concept premises with sci-fi elements mixed in with existential themes; Standalone episodic stories tied together with slow-moving continuity; Continuing to experience effects from previous multiverse story arcs; and continually changing relationships within the Smith family.

The last few seasons have relied more on character-centred storytelling, yet still have used the type of off-the-wall humour associated with the show. The comments made by the cast indicate that Season 9 will pick up where the other seasons left off instead of wiping the slate clean.

The preview clip from February 2026 shows off-the-wall humour through over-the-top high school drama, cloning and inventions gone wild. However, no solid information regarding the story arcs for the entire season will be provided in this preview clip.
