Ricky Ponting ignores Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma as he picks top two run-getters of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has named Rishabh Pant and Steve Smith as the top two run getters of the upcoming Test series between India and Australia. The two teams will compete in a five-match series starting from November 22 in Perth. Ahead of the series opener, there have been discussions about who could be the top performers in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024.

Ponting feels Team India wicket-keeper Pant and Australian legend Smith are going to be up against each other to rule the batting charts in five matches. Ponting feels Smith moving back to number four spot in the batting order is going to help him. Smith has scored 2042 runs at an average of 65.87, including nine centuries and five fifties against India.

“Steve Smith and Rishabh Pant are my picks for the leading run scorer’s spot. I think Smith has a point to prove and with him moving back to his favorite batting spot, there is a chance of Steve leading the scoring charts in the series,” Ponting said on The ICC Review.

Ponting mentioned that Pant could be dangerous batter in the middle-order.

“Rishabh is back in the Test side and he is batting in the middle-order. The ball becomes a bit old by them and Pant can play his strokes. He is in good form and I will go with him as one of the leading run-scorers,” he added.

Ever since his return to India National Cricket Team, Pant has accumulated 422 runs from five Tests matches at an average of 46.88 and a strike rate of 86.47 with the help of one century and three fifties. The India star also managed 624 runs from 12 innings against Australia. He has hit one ton and two fifties.
