Rinku Singh appointed Regional Sports Officer in Uttar Pradesh

Indian cricketer Rinku Singh has been appointed as a Regional Sports Officer by the Uttar Pradesh government under its sports quota scheme, recognising his achievements in international cricket.

The 26-year-old batter expressed gratitude to the state government and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the appointment, as well as for the financial assistance of ₹3 crore extended to him.

Appointment and acknowledgement

In a video message shared on social media, Rinku Singh thanked the authorities for honouring him with the post.

“I thank the Uttar Pradesh government and Hon’ble Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for appointing me to the post of Regional Sports Officer,” he said.

However, the cricketer could not attend the official appointment letter distribution ceremony held in Lucknow due to his ongoing commitments with his Indian Premier League (IPL) team, Kolkata Knight Riders.

He stated that he would soon travel to Lucknow to formally receive the appointment letter and seek the Chief Minister’s blessings.

Part of broader sports recognition initiative

Rinku’s appointment is part of a wider initiative by the Uttar Pradesh government to provide सरकारी jobs to international-level athletes as recognition for their achievements.

Several other sportspersons have also been selected under the scheme. Among them is Rajkumar Pal, a member of India’s bronze medal-winning hockey team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, who will be appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

Paralympic gold medallist Praveen Kumar is also set to be appointed as DSP, while athletes like Ajit Singh and Simran will be given roles as District Panchayat Raj Officers.

Flexible role to continue cricket

Officials from the state sports department confirmed that Rinku Singh will join duty at the sports directorate office in Lucknow once his schedule permits.

They added that his responsibilities will be structured in a way that allows him to continue his professional cricket career alongside administrative duties.

Rising cricket career

Rinku Singh has seen a rapid rise in Indian cricket in recent years. Known for his explosive batting and finishing abilities, he has become a key player for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.

He was also part of India’s title-winning squad at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, further cementing his place in the national setup.

Despite personal challenges, including the loss of his father during the tournament, Rinku demonstrated resilience by rejoining the squad after attending the funeral.

Conclusion

The appointment of Rinku Singh as Regional Sports Officer highlights the Uttar Pradesh government’s effort to recognise and support athletes beyond their sporting careers. By offering stable employment and financial backing, the initiative aims to encourage more young talents to pursue sports at a professional level.

As Rinku balances his cricketing commitments with his new role, his journey continues to inspire aspiring athletes across the country.
