Rishabh Pant Equalls MS Dhoni Record With Century

Rishabh Pant Equalls MS Dhoni Record With Century: Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has scored a quickfire 100 in the second inning of the ongoing India vs Bangladesh Test match. He also equaled a long-standing record, which was held by MS Dhoni.

India is facing Bangladesh in the first Test of a two-match series, with the game being played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. It was the visitors who won the toss and decided to bowl first.

In the first inning, India’s top order started to collapse, losing three wickets for 34 runs. Among the top six, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Pant were the top scorers with 56 and 39 runs, respectively. In that inning, it was the all-rounder duo of Ravindra Jadeja (86) and Ravichandran Ashwin (113) that saved the Indian inning. The Men in Blue scored 376 in their outing.

In response, Bangladesh could only muster up 149 runs, as Shakib Al Hasan was his team’s top scorer with 32 and Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets.

India again got off to a poor start, as both openers were dismissed before the score of 30. Kohli departed soon after, as the team score was 67/3. At this point, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill took the charge. The two youngsters batted through the day and onto Day 3.

As India already came into this inning with a 228-run lead, they just needed 200 or so runs to feel comfortable going into the fourth, and that is precisely what Gill and Pant did. The two men first reached their respective 50s and then reached the three-digit mark on the third day of the match.

Pant himself scored 109 in just 128 deliveries before being caught and bowled by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. India declared their inning not long after.

This was Pant’s sixth Test 100, which puts him on par with the legendary wicketkeeper and captain MS Dhoni for the most centuries for the Indian Cricket Team in red ball cricket as a wicketkeeper. This feat becomes even more impressive when we recognise that Dhoni played 90 Test matches in his illustrious career. Meanwhile, Pant has only played 34 and has become the joint-Indian wicketkeeper with most Test tons. Wriddhiman Saha is third on that list with three 100s.

Earlier in the match, Ashwin scored his sixth 100 in Test cricket too, doing so in his 101st match.

India declared their inning at 287/4, giving Bangladesh a massive target of 515 in the fourth inning.
