Rishabh Pant Steps Down as LSG Captain After IPL 2026 Setback
The Lucknow Super Giants have announced that the request from Rishabh Pant to be relieved of his leadership duties has been approved by the team management.
Super Giants had a disappointing campaign in the IPL 2026, finishing with 4 wins out of 14 games and completing in the bottom of the points table.
Rishabh Pant who joined LSG for a record breaking price of INR 27 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 and did not perform during the last two seasons.
His performance with bat was not that impressive as he scored only 312 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 138.05.
“Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) wish to formally announce that Rishabh Pant has requested to be relieved of his captaincy duties with the franchise, and the franchisee has accepted his request with immediate effect,” said a statement from LSG.

Speaking on the incident, LSG director Tom Moody said, “Rishabh approached the franchise with this request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy.”
“We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective — rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards,” he added.
Under his captaincy, LSG have won 10 games out of 28 games across two seasons. Despite being considered as one of the destructive batters, he scored only 581 runs in two seasons.
However, the franchise did not make any announcement regarding the next captain. “With an eye on making a positive comeback in the upcoming season, the new Lucknow Super Giants captain will be announced in due course.” the official statement from the franchise read.
With LSG are in search for their new captain, they have strong contenders like Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran who have captained their national teams during their careers.
