Raj Kapoor changed the ending of his film Bobby after his brother-in-law advised the opposite. Scroll down to read who was Kapoor’s brother-in-law.
Raj Kapoor carved a name for himself in the Bollywood industry with his captivating performances. Throughout his career, Kapoor often chose to play light-hearted roles. However, very few people know that the iconic actor struggled with temper issues. Apart from acting, Kapoor also ventured into directing films. During that era, directors would risk everything to create a masterpiece, and Raj Kapoor was no exception.
While producing Mera Naam Joker, Kapoor nearly lost everything after the film became a huge box-office flop. The actor was left with just enough money to take one final gamble—and he did so with his next film, Bobby, featuring his son Rishi Kapoor.
Raj Kapoor’s gamble paid off as Bobby became a game-changer for RK Films, earning massive praise. However, it wasn’t Rishi Kapoor’s acting that resonated most with the audience but Prem Nath’s performance, which became a pivotal element of the film.
Now, in a recent interview, Prem Nath’s son Monty revealed what could have been the original ending of Bobby. Last-minute changes, based on Prem Nath’s suggestion, turned the film into a resounding success.
The Original Ending of Bobby
During a conversation with Vickey Lalwani, Monty shared, “Bobby was essentially a love story, and like all love stories such as Laila Majnu or Romeo and Juliet, the lead characters were to die. In the original script, Rishi and Dimple’s characters go up a hill, jump into the water, and die. That was the original script.”
Monty explained that until the point when the characters were about to reach the cliff, the storyline and script of the film remained intact. “The change happened after that jump,” he said.
How the Ending Was Changed
Monty revealed that his father, Prem Nath, who played Dimple Kapadia’s father in the film, suggested an alternative ending to Kapoor. He proposed that the movie should conclude on a happy note. Nath suggested that the characters of the two fathers should save the kids after their jump, leading to a joyful reunion.
“My father suggested, ‘Don’t keep it as a sad ending. Make it a happy ending. Let my character save Chintu, and let Pran Saab save Dimple. They both swim into the water and save the kids. And in the end, there is a reunion on a happy note,’” Monty shared.
A Decision That Made Bobby a Blockbuster
This decision worked wonders for the film, which became an instant hit and one of the most successful movies of 1973. The happy ending not only resonated with audiences but also turned Bobby into a timeless classic, cementing its place in Bollywood history.
Prem was also Raj’s brother-in-law as Raj was married to Krishna, Prem’s sister.
