Bollywood’s ‘Success Queen’ emerged from the body market, her whole story is soul-stirring.

New Delhi. Behind the glamor of Bollywood, sometimes there is a darkness that can make anyone shudder. The story of writer Shagufta Rafiq, who made others feel the pain and love through films like ‘Aashiqui 2’, ‘Murder 2’ and ‘Jannat 2’, is no less than a film script. His journey, which started from the streets of Jism Bazaar at the age of 17, took him through the bars of Dubai and finally to the office of Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt. This story is about the tremendous courage of a woman who learned to bloom like a lotus even in the middle of a swamp.

Shagufta Rafiq left even the directors and actors behind with his pen. Shagufta, who is called the ‘backbone’ of Mahesh Bhatt’s camp, gave a new direction to Bollywood with films like ‘Woh Lamhe’, ‘Dhokha’, ‘Raaz’ and ‘Awarapan’, but do you know that the pen that wrote these emotional stories was actually full of the ink of tears and insults?

The biggest wound of Shagufta’s life is her identity. According to media reports, till date he does not know who his real parents are? She was brought up by yesteryear’s actress Anwari Begum. Many rumors spread in the society – some said that she was Anwari’s granddaughter, while others said that she was found abandoned on the road. This pain of finding one’s roots is still visible in Shagufta’s eyes.

He once said that there can be no greater sorrow for a person than not knowing the name of the mother who gave birth to him. Shagufta’s teenage years were not a dream, but a nightmare. Extreme poverty and home conditions pushed them onto a path that no one chooses willingly. At the age of just 17, she was sent to dance in private parties. In an interview given to Filmfare, he told that those parties were no less than a brothel. ‘Respectable’ people pretending to be from a civilized society used to come there to watch the women dance.

On someone’s advice, Shagufta went to Dubai, where she started working as a bar dancer. At that time he used to get Rs 3000 for one night’s performance. Shagufta tells that there she used to entertain the men, sing and dance so that the family could survive.

Meanwhile, she met a 45 year old man who offered her a lot of money for her dance. He was Shagufta’s first love and even though he never married her, he respected her a lot as a person. At the same time, the year 2002 proved to be a turning point in Shagufta’s life. She met Mahesh Bhatt. Bhatt’s wise eye recognized the pain and talent hidden within him, which was desperate to be expressed on paper.

Bhatt gave her a chance and Shagufta never looked back. He wrote some special scenes for the film ‘Kalyug’ (2006), which gave him recognition in the entire industry. After this came ‘Woh Lamhe’, which made Shagufta a shining star overnight. After this Shagufta gave many blockbuster films. Films like ‘Murder 2’, ‘Jannat 2’, ‘Aashiqui 2’ and ‘Raaz 3’ took him to the heights of success which every writer dreams of.

Shagufta not only wrote the screenplay but also gave life to the dialogues which directly connected with the audience. Later he tried his hand in direction and established himself as a versatile filmmaker. She emerged as a ‘success queen’ of Bollywood.
