Rithika becomes India’s first transwoman cricket umpire
Coimbatore: In a landmark moment for inclusivity in Indian sport, 31-year-old Rithika has carved her name in history as the country’s first transwoman cricket umpire. Officiating matches across Tamil Nadu districts, she is not only building a career in cricket but also breaking long-standing barriers in a traditionally conservative space.
From BPO employee to cricket umpire
Rithika’s journey into cricket began far from the pitch. A diploma holder in mechanical engineering, she was working in a BPO in Mohali, Punjab, in 2019 when her interest in umpiring was first sparked while watching Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.
Determined to follow her passion, she returned to her hometown Salem and began training under district umpiring official Jayaraman. With dedication and consistent effort, she prepared for and cleared umpiring examinations, gradually stepping into the world of competitive cricket officiating.
A journey of identity and courage
Behind her professional growth lies a deeply personal journey. During her training period, Jayaraman’s wife recognised Rithika’s gender identity, opening the door for an important and emotional conversation.
Rithika revealed that she had long suppressed her identity due to fears about her career and societal acceptance. In a crucial show of support, her mentor encouraged her to first establish herself professionally and build confidence before transitioning.
That encouragement proved transformative. Rithika stayed focused, completed her qualifications, and eventually embraced her identity with confidence — a decision that would redefine her life and career.
Challenging beginnings on the field
Her official debut as a transwoman umpire in 2024 in Coimbatore was not without obstacles. On her very first assignment, she was stopped at the stadium gate and denied entry by security personnel despite being an appointed official.
Only after escalating the issue was she allowed inside, nearly 45 minutes late. What could have been a discouraging setback instead became a moment of resolve.
Since then, acceptance has steadily grown.
Growing respect in cricket circles
Rithika now regularly officiates league matches across Salem, Namakkal, and Coimbatore districts, as well as games organised by local groups such as Rotary Club and BNI.
Her calm presence and firm decision-making have earned her respect among players and officials alike. Importantly, she notes a shift in attitude on the field.
“Cricketers call me ‘ma’am’. I am happy and grateful,” she said, reflecting on the growing acceptance within the cricketing fraternity.
Officials from the Coimbatore Cricket Association and senior umpires have also extended strong support, ensuring she feels safe, respected, and valued in her role.
Dreams beyond district cricket
Rithika’s ambitions extend well beyond local leagues. She aspires to officiate at the state level and gain recognition from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Her ultimate dream is to stand as an umpire in the IPL and, eventually, in international cricket — a goal that once seemed distant but now feels within reach.
A symbol of resilience and change
Raised by a single mother alongside six siblings, Rithika’s life has been shaped by financial struggles and personal challenges. Yet, her journey reflects resilience, determination, and courage.
Today, she stands not just as an umpire but as a powerful symbol of inclusion — representing progress for the transgender community in Indian sport.
With every decision she signals on the field, Rithika is doing more than officiating a match — she is redefining who belongs in the game.
