Roads submerged due to heavy rain in Ghatal, West Bengal, problem of water logging in many villages.
Flood situation has arisen in Ghatal of West Bengal due to heavy rains due to the effect of winds. The water level of every river has increased. Situations of water logging have arisen in many villages and wards of the city. The roads have been submerged. The administration said that the water of Shilavati river is flowing above the danger mark in Kshirpai. The dam of Shilavati river has broken at two places in Chandrakona-1 block. Due to this, water has entered many villages.
Relief camps have been set up in Chandrakona-1 block. Ghatal sub-divisional ruler Suman Vishwas said that the administration is keeping an eye on the situation. There is no danger of flood due to rain. There is this danger in the western part of Paschim Medinipur district and Bankura and Purulia districts. Such conditions had persisted since Friday. The situation here worsened on Saturday after heavy rains. A flood like situation arose here.
Water has entered 12 out of 17 wards of Ghatal city. Due to this many roads were submerged. Flood situation also persists in six panchayat areas of Ghatal block. In September, waterlogging was seen due to breach of embankment of Hiradharpur and Bhawanipur rivers of Chandrakona-1 block. As per the instructions of the Irrigation Minister, the Irrigation Department has started the repair work of the same dam.
The water level of rivers is far below the danger mark.
At the same time, Shilavati dam broke again in Hiradharpur and Bhawanipur on Saturday night. Due to this, flood water entered many villages. Due to this, rice cultivation in the area has suffered huge losses. Due to breakage of bamboo fence in Manshuka of Ghatal block on Saturday afternoon, local people are facing difficulty in crossing the Jhumi river. However, the water level of Kansavati and Roopnarayan rivers in Ghatal is far below the danger mark. According to the administration, if there is no rain then there will be no need to worry about floods. It is expected that the water level of all the rivers will start decreasing.
Flood created a situation in the surrounding areas
According to Ghatal SDO Suman Biswas, “Recently, due to the effect of Dana, heavy rains for two days have created a flood situation in Ghatal Block, Kata Municipality and surrounding areas. Due to this rain the water level of the rivers has increased rapidly. This has had a serious impact on agriculture. The paddy crop of the farmers has been completely destroyed. Crops were ruined due to water logging in many fields, the paddy crop which was already ready has also been affected.
He further said, “Now the situation is that farmers are not able to harvest their crops. Apart from this, the deadline for farming has also been affected. Farmers will not be able to harvest their crops on time, which will further affect their financial condition. “Lack of resources used in farming and crop destruction due to floods have created a serious crisis in local agriculture.”
