Rohit Sharma breaks Chris Gayle’s record for most ODI sixes as an opener
Indian batting star Rohit Sharma has officially etched his name in the history books once again. During the first ODI against New Zealand at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium, the “Hitman” surpassed the legendary Chris Gayle to become the highest six-hitter among openers in ODI history.
Rohit entered the match needing just two sixes to break the tie with Gayle.
He reached the milestone in the 7th over, stepping down the track to loft Kiwi pacer Kyle Jamieson over mid-on for a towering maximum. This took his tally to 329 sixes as an opener, moving him past Gayle’s long-standing record of 328.
What makes the feat even more remarkable is the speed at which it was achieved. Rohit reached the record in just 191 innings, which is 93 fewer than the 284 innings Chris Gayle needed.

This efficiency highlights Rohit’s evolution into arguably the most dangerous opener in white-ball history.
The record was part of a double-milestone evening for the veteran. With that same strike, Rohit became the first player in cricketing history to hit 650 international sixes across all formats.
While he was eventually dismissed for 26, his explosive start provided the platform for India’s successful chase of 301. His feat was accompanied by Virat Kohli, who crossed 28,000 international runs during the same match, as India took a 1-0 lead in the series.
