Rohit Sharma experiences major decline in latest ICC Test batter rankings
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma saw a heavy decline in the ICC Test batter rankings update on Wednesday. This update brought notable changes across the rankings, with one of the biggest shifts being Rohit’s nine-place drop from 15th to 24th.
This marks Rohit’s lowest ranking in nearly 6 years. Previously, he had fallen down to the 44th position back in 2018. Rohit’s rating also dropped to 649 in the latest update. This is his lowest rating since February 2021 when it fell down to 626.
The batter’s recent poor performances in home matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand have contributed to this decline. In the Bengaluru Test against the Black Caps, he managed scores of only 2 and 52, followed by 0 and 8 in Pune, leading to India’s first Test series defeat at home in 12 years.
Other Indian players also experienced ranking drops. Virat Kohli fell 6 places to 14th, while Rishabh Pant slipped 5 spots to 11th.
Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah also lost his number 1 spot on the bowler rankings to South African pacer Kagiso Rabada who picked up a brilliant 6-wicket haul against Bangladesh.
The silver lining for India was batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who gained a spot in the batter rankings and moved to the 3rd spot, displacing England’s Harry Brook.
