Rohit Sharma is set to join team India in Australia Check the details inside
As per reports, Indian captain Rohit Sharma is likely to join the team during the first Test match of Border-Gavaskar Trophy series played at Optus Stadium in Perth.
As reported by Cricbuzz, the Indian skipper is likely to join the team on the 3rd day of the first test i.e. on November 24. His exit was deferred on account of the delivery of his second baby.
There has been confirmation from the relevant authorities in the Refer Cricket India BCCI that the player would be present in the team by Sunday.
Jasprit Bumrah is expected to assume the captaincy in Rohit’s place. The pace spearhead had stated prior to the commencement of the first Test that he received advice from the captain, which enabled him to better understand the captaincy role.
As it is being said, it is likely that Rohit will compete in the practice match against Prime Minister’s XI before the second Test at Adelaide which will be a day-night Test with a pink-ball as well. The expectation that the Indian captain will arrive in the country just in time for the Test match is even more optimistic for the team as he plays a very importance role in the team both as a captain and as an opening batsman.
Who will open batting in place of Rohit is still an issue to resolve. Reports have suggested that the duo of KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran are leading the race to take up the position, however, it is unclear if the Indian team will go with the experienced option of Rahul or take a risk on Easwaran and give him a chance to play for the first time.
Shubman Gill may also be another player who would be absent with the opening Test hanging in the balance owing to a possible thumb fracture sustained while practicing. Although this is not official, the team management may decide on his fitness in view of the remaining matches in the series.
India, on the other hand, would aim to maintain and defend the title of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy because they also wish to leave open the possibility of qualification in the World Test Championship (2023-25) cycle. In that to qualify India need to win 4 Test matches out of 5 and draw one against the Aussies.
