Rohit Sharma justifies batter’s selection for ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, revealed that Yashasvi Jaiswal was selected for the 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 based on his potential. He also acknowledged that some players were unfortunate to miss out but emphasized that it’s impossible to satisfy everyone.

On Saturday, January 18, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, alongside captain Rohit, announced India’s squad for the prestigious ICC event. While Rohit and Shubman Gill were chosen as the primary openers, Jaiswal, who has yet to make his ODI debut, was included as a third opening option.

Addressing the media after the squad announcement, Rohit elaborated on the decision to bring Jaiswal into the fold, highlighting his potential as a key factor for inclusion.

“We chose Jaiswal based on his recent performances, even though he hasn’t played ODI cricket yet. He was selected for his potential, and sometimes that’s the approach you have to take. As a result, some players may miss out, which is unfortunate, but you can’t please everyone. The goal is to select the best team to win in various situations, and I believe these players give us that flexibility.”

“Shubman was already serving as vice-captain during the Sri Lanka series, so I wouldn’t read too much into it.. Much of the feedback comes from within the dressing room, and it’s important to keep your options open. One of the challenges we face is that not many players are captaining their state teams these days, but we’re always looking for individuals who exhibit leadership qualities.”
