Rohit Sharma close to winning Ranji Trophy, will become the first Indian captain to do so
Indian captain Rohit Sharma will play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir at the BKC Ground from January 23 to 26. The 37-year-old Rohit confirmed his availability for the upcoming Ranji Trophy match during the announcement of India's 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy 2025.
Rohit will play for Mumbai under the captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane. Apart from Rohit, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was India's best batsman in Australia, will also play in the Mumbai vs Jammu and Kashmir Ranji Trophy match and he is set to open the innings.
Mumbai will also have Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dubey and Shardul Thakur for this star-studded match. However, they will not have the services of Sarfaraz Khan, who is suffering from a rib injury.
Rohit Sharma is playing Ranji Trophy after a decade, so a large number of spectators are expected on the match day at the Mumbai Cricket Association's BKC facility.
The Indian captain is training with the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in BKC ahead of the match against Jammu and Kashmir.
Rohit Sharma close to achieving a unique achievement
Rohit Sharma is playing Ranji Trophy match after a long time. He last played a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai against Uttar Pradesh in 2015.
Rohit will have a chance to achieve a unique feat during the upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir. Rohit is set to become the first Indian Test captain since Anil Kumble to play in a Ranji Trophy game in the last 17 years.
Notably, Kumble represented his home state Karnataka in a Ranji Trophy game against Himachal Pradesh in 2007 and former Indian head coach Rahul Dravid also featured in that game.
Rohit had a poor performance with the bat during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scoring 3, 9, 10, 3, 6 during the 1-3 loss in Australia and he will be in some trouble ahead of the much-awaited ICC Champions Trophy. Would like to get the form.
