New Delhi: Rohit Sharma is about to become the second-fastest batsman in the world to achieve a significant record. He made his ODI debut in 2007, but it took six years for him to secure his position in the team. In December 2021, Rohit replaced Virat Kohli as the captain of the Indian ODI team.

Rohit Sharma will lead India as they make their highly anticipated return to the ODI format in a three-match series against England. India only played three ODIs in 2024, suffering a 0-2 defeat against Sri Lanka and failing to win a 50-over game. With their sights set on winning the ICC Champions Trophy, the Men in Blue are eager to return to action next month.

Rohit Sharma is confirmed to lead India in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Under his leadership, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and clinched the 2024 T20 World Cup title. Rohit, aiming for his second ICC trophy as captain, is just 134 runs away from a major milestone—11000 runs in ODIs. With 10,866 runs in 257 innings across 265 matches, the right-handed batsman is on the verge of achieving this remarkable feat.

Rohit Sharma on the Verge of Becoming the Second-Fastest to 11000 ODI Runs

If Rohit Sharma scores 134 more runs in his next 19 innings, he will become the second-fastest batsman to complete 11000 runs in ODIs. The record for the fastest to reach this milestone belongs to Virat Kohli, who achieved it in just 222 innings during the 2019 World Cup.

Fastest Batsmen to Score 11000 ODI Runs

Virat Kohli: 222 innings
Sachin Tendulkar: 276 innings
Ricky Ponting: 286 innings
Sourav Ganguly: 288 innings
Jacques Kallis: 293 innings
Virat Kohli, who reached his 11000-run mark while captaining India, may soon have company in the form of Rohit Sharma, who is also leading the ODI team. Sachin Tendulkarwho needed 276 innings, holds the second spot on the list.

Rohit’s Journey to ODI Success

Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut in 2007 but struggled to secure a permanent place in the team for six years. MS Dhoni’s decision to promote him as an opener in 2013 proved to be a turning point in his career, and he solidified his spot in the team.

His consistency with the bat earned him the vice-captaincy in 2017. Rohit replaced Virat Kohli as the captain for T20Is and ODIs in 2021 and has since led the team to major successes, including the 2024 T20 World Cup win. He also captains the Indian Test team.
