Rohit Sharma registers this unwanted record as the skipper of India

On Sunday, November 3, New Zealand concluded their tour of India in style by beating their hosts, India, in the third Test match played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, by a margin of 26 runs. The series therefore ended in favor of India with a 3-0 score line. The Indian batsmen, however, fell short of the score and only managed to make 121 runs in the chase of 147 runs set for them. The loss in the third Test came as a hard pill for the players and the fans in the stands as it was the first time in history that India suffered a clean sweep in a three match series played on home ground.

In the year of 2024, India lost four out of eleven Tests, and the third Test against New Zealand was the fourth Test match beating the hosts. Later in that year, while in India, Head Coach Rohit lost four Test games which equalled the highest number of losses by an Indian captain in the home conditions in one calendar year records kept by former captain MAK Pataudi.

There were two home losses in the year of Nineteen Sixty Nine, one was during the New Zealand Series and other during the Australian Tour, where by Pataudi was captain. Thus, Rohit faced his first loss as the Indian skipper in 2024 against England in a Test match played from the twenty-fifth to twenty-eight of January in Hyderabad.

India took the next six Tests without a loss but suffered from dispiriting losses in succession to the Kiwis. The Black Caps in Tom Latham’s first series as captain finished off India by eight-wicket margins in Bengaluru, 113 runs in Pune, and 26 runs in Mumbai.

Currently, Rohit has overall lost five Tests in India, placing him second among the Indian captains with most indoor losses. Only Pataudi (9) has lost more Tests than Rohit in India

When Virat Kohli was captain of India, he lost only three Tests played in India.

After a humiliating loss at home, India will not hop on the first flight to Australia for a filled five-match Test series. The first match of the 2024-25 season of Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be played in Optus Stadium, Perth on November 22. The remaining four matches will take place in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, in that order.

India, which lost its No. 1 rank in the WTC 2023-25, has to win four out of the remaining five matches in order to secure a position in the WTC 2025 final.
