Rohit Sharma should have announced retirement much earlier, says former Australia player

Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg believes that Rohit Sharma’s Test career may be nearing its end, citing the Indian captain’s recent struggles with the bat. Hogg pointed out that the 37-year-old opener has been out of form in recent months, particularly during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where Rohit scored just 31 runs in five innings. Over his last 15 Test innings, the senior batter has accumulated only 164 runs, averaging a mere 10.93, with one half-century to his name.

On his YouTube channel, Hogg shared his worries, stating, “I believe Rohit Sharma’s Test career is likely over at this point. He should have moved on.”

Hogg criticized Rohit Sharma’s recent form, saying, “His form over the last 6-7 months has not been great.” He also raised concerns about the manner of Rohit’s dismissals, especially as an opening batsman. Hogg highlighted the way Rohit has been dismissed, saying, “He is getting bowled, LBW, and as an opener, those kinds of dismissals shouldn’t be occurring early in the innings. LBW, yes, but he shouldn’t be getting bowled between the bat and pad.”

Regarding Rohit’s decision to step away from the playing XI for the fifth Test of the series in Sydney, Hogg praised the move but suggested it should have been made earlier. Hogg expressed disappointment over Rohit’s current form, saying, “It’s a little bit disappointing with the form now, and I think the red-ball game, he did the right thing in Australia.”

Hogg suggested that Rohit Sharma might have made a better decision earlier, saying, “Probably should’ve done it in the Melbourne Test and let Gill play in that Test as well.”

However, Hogg remains optimistic about Rohit’s future in limited-overs cricket. With the ICC 2025 Champions Trophy set to start in Feb, Hogg believes Rohit still has much to offer in the 50-over format. “When it comes to One day International’s, I still think he’s got a lot to offer. You can tackle it with greater assertiveness and liberty as well.”

He also acknowledged Rohit’s outstanding career, adding, “He’s had a wonderful career, there’s no doubt about that. I hope for his and India’s sake, he just goes out on a high whenever he wants to.”
