The Retention Day ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction is only a couple of weeks away for all 10 franchises. All the teams have until October 31 to finalise their retentions as communicated to them by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Fans are bracing themselves for some shock moves and there will be none bigger than former India T20I captain Rohit Sharma leaving his beloved Mumbai Indians this year. There is much speculation since last year that all is not well in the camp of six-time IPL champions which was obvious by the sacking of head coach Mark Boucher and former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene returning to take charge of the side ahead of IPL 2025 season.

There is buzz on social media that Rohit Sharma could be headed for a new team and possibly even Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to hook up with former India captain Virat Kohli. Rohit and Virat are the two highest run-getter for India in T20I cricket and both have retired from this format after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 earlier this year.

Their India teammate and Rajasthan Royals off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has already put a ‘price-tag’ of Rohit Sharma if he has to join RCB next season.

“Agar Rohit Sharma ke liye aap jaa rahe hai to 20 crore rakhna padega (You need to keep 20 crores with yourself if you want to sign up Rohit Sharma),” Ashwin said during a discussion on his YouTube channel.

Rohit has been part of the IPL auction twice, first time in 2008 when he went to Deccan Chargers (now Sunrisers Hyderabad) for $700,000. The former India T20I skipper won his first IPL title with the Chargers in 2009 season, when the T20 league was held in South Africa.

The next time that he was available in the auction was in 2011 when he was bought by Mumbai Indians for $2 million and since then he has been part of the Mukesh Ambani-owned franchise.

However, Rohit Sharma could be one of the six retentions for the Mumbai Indians. While skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah could be retained for Rs 18 crore each, skipper Hardik Pandya and Rohit could be retained for Rs 14 crore while Tilak Varma may be offered Rs 11 crore as well.
