Rovman Powell’s Personal Life
Rovman Powell grew up in Jamaica in a small home with his mother, Joanne, and his sister. His mother was a single parent who worked multiple jobs to support the family. Their house was unfinished for years, and during heavy rain, water would leak through the roof. As a child, Powell would stay awake at night to push the water away so his mother and sister could sleep dry. He has said he felt it was his role to protect his family from a young age.
He did not grow up with his father. In grade six, a school assignment about fathers made him emotional. His teacher, Nicholas Dillon, became a strong father figure in his life and encouraged him not to let his past define him. They remain close.
Powell believed that either education or cricket would help lift his family out of poverty. He worked hard in school and focused seriously on cricket. He later earned a scholarship to the University of the West Indies and progressed through Jamaica Under-19 cricket before being picked by the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League.
