Was Rs 236 deducted from your SBI account? Know why State Bank deducted money from your savings account?

SBI savings account holders beware! State Bank of India is one of the largest financial institutions in the world in terms of customer base. SBI is often called the banker of every Indian as it serves more than 50 crore customers. As customers go digital, the bank is also changing its banking style – be it its app YONO or internet banking facilities. State Bank of India is working to improve the banking experience of its customers and thus is introducing many features.

Like any other bank, SBI also issues debit cards, commonly known as ATM cards, to its customers. ATM cards enable users to withdraw money from ATMs and make online payments for shopping. However, issuing an ATM card and ensuring its proper functionality is more complex than it seems.

Have you ever checked your SBI passbook closely? When you check the entries in your passbook or check the message you receive from the bank from time to time, you will find that the bank has debited Rs 236 from your bank account without any transaction. If yes, then we have the answer for you. Actually, money has been deducted from your account as part of the annual maintenance/service charge for the debit/ATM card you are using.

SBI offers many types of debit cards to its customers, most of which are Classic, Silver, Global or Contactless cards. The bank charges an annual maintenance fee of Rs 200 for these cards. Now, you might be wondering that if the AMC charge is Rs 200, why did SBI cut it to Rs 236 instead? This is because the government levies 18% GST on the transactions done by the bank. Therefore, instead of paying GST from one's own pocket, the bank deducts GST from the customer's savings bank account. So, Rs 200 + 18% of Rs 200 = Rs 200 + Rs 36 = Rs 236. Hopefully, now all your doubts will be cleared and you will not need to go to the bank for this.

While SBI customers with Classic/Silver/Global contactless debit cards are charged Rs 236, customers with premium debit cards are charged more as per the table given (amount excluding 18% GST).

You should also note that the annual maintenance fee for Yuva/Gold/Combo/My Card (Image) Debit Card is Rs 250 + GST, for Platinum Debit Card Rs 325 + GST, for Pride/Premium Business Debit Card Rs 350 + GST + GST for Pride/Premium Business Debit Card is Rs 425 + GST.
