Kapurthala: RTI activist and advocate Simranjit Singh was shot dead in Kapurthala district of Punjab. According to the police, the reason behind the incident is said to be a dispute related to money transaction. The cousin of the deceased has been arrested in the case and is being interrogated.
The incident happened amid financial dispute
A sensational murder incident came to light in Satnampura police station area of Kapurthala district on Saturday. RTI activist and lawyer Simranjeet Singh was shot dead. According to the police, preliminary investigation has revealed that there was a dispute going on between the deceased and his cousin regarding financial transactions for a long time.
According to the information, both of them had reached Maheru village to look into a property related matter. During this time the dispute escalated and the incident took a violent turn.
Bullet fired during inspection of plot
According to police officials, Simranjeet Singh had reached the spot in his SUV, while the accused Sharanjeet Singh alias Twinkle had come in a separate vehicle with his associates. There was an altercation between the two sides, after which the situation became tense.
Investigation has revealed that when Simranjit Singh was standing near a plot, the accused allegedly fired at him from behind. He died on the spot after being shot in the head. After the incident, the accused and his associates fled from there.
Police caught the accused
As soon as information about the incident was received, police and senior officials reached the spot. During the investigation, the police arrested Sharanjeet Singh on charges of murder. A pistol and some live cartridges have also been recovered from his possession.
The police have collected many important evidence from the incident site. Mobile phones and other items have also been seized from the deceased, which are being investigated.
Senior officials inspected the incident site
Seeing the seriousness of the matter, senior police officials visited the spot. Officials have given instructions to collect evidence and investigate every aspect of the incident.
Police say that the interrogation of the accused is ongoing and whether any other person has played a role in the incident is also being investigated. A case has been registered under relevant sections.
