Rúben Amorim backs Manchester United’s defence; Calls for collective improvement

Manchester United head coach Rúben Amorim has dismissed suggestions that the club need to overhaul their defence, insisting that the quality already exists within the squad and that the focus should instead be on improving team-wide defensive responsibility.

Speaking after being questioned about United’s defensive struggles, Amorim was clear in his assessment. “No, I think we have talent in the back,” the Portuguese coach said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano. “We just need to be better as a team defending.”

Since taking charge at Old Trafford in October last year, Amorim has worked to implement a structured and aggressive tactical identity. However, United’s defensive consistency has remained a talking point, with the team often exposed during transitions and moments of poor collective organisation rather than through individual mistakes.

Amorim’s comments underline his belief that defensive solidity begins higher up the pitch. The United boss has repeatedly stressed the importance of coordinated pressing, midfield compactness, and discipline from forwards when out of possession. According to the 39-year-old, defending is a collective responsibility, not just a task for centre-backs and full-backs.
