There has been a sharp reaction to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s statement related to the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mamdani said that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu in the case of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
His administration is considering the possibility of arresting the Israeli PM while he attends the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September.
Trump said- Netanyahu will not be arrested in America
President Donald Trump clarified in a post on Truth Social that Netanyahu will not be arrested in any way during his stay in the US. Trump did not mention Mamdani in his post. Netanyahu’s office responded by calling the ICC a kangaroo court and awarding the arrest warrant issued by the court a fake contract. According to the PMO, the ICC has no jurisdiction over neither the US nor Israel.
The statement further said that former ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan had issued the warrant as a deceitful tactic to divert attention from the sexual misconduct allegations later leveled against him. In a scathing criticism published in X, the Prime Minister’s Office claimed that Mamdani was following Khan’s strategy by targeting Israel in order to cover domestic issues in New York.
The PMO wrote that instead of supporting Khan’s criminal activities, Mamdani should focus on correcting his policies, which are increasing the crisis in New York. Mamdani is unnecessarily wasting his time by targeting the Jewish leader and the only democratic country in West Asia.
