Russia captured Luhansk, Ukraine rejected
Russia has claimed full control of Luhansk, but Ukraine rejects this. The war continues in Donbass. Russia steps up drone attacks, North Korea’s military gets involved and security concerns rise in Europe.
World News: Russia has claimed to have completely captured the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine. Russia’s Defense Ministry said units of its Western military group had completely liberated Luhansk. This is the same area on which Russia launched an attack in 2022, but could not achieve it then. However, Ukraine has not confirmed this claim, leaving doubts about the actual situation on the ground.
Russian claims in Donbass
Apart from Luhansk, Russia has also claimed occupation of Kharkiv and some villages of Zaporizhia. Luhansk and Donetsk together form the Donbass region, the largest battlefield of this war. Already 99 percent of Luhansk was under the control of Russia and now it is trying to claim it completely as its own. Russia has also increased pressure on Ukraine to withdraw its forces from Donbass. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that this step should have been taken earlier so that the heated phase of the war could end.
Ukraine’s strong response
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected Russia’s demand. He said that Russia is wrong to think that it can capture the entire Donbass in such a short time. Zelensky clarified that Ukraine wants a diplomatic solution, but a ceasefire is possible only on the condition of existing fronts. He also said that Russia has put an ultimatum before America that if Ukraine does not withdraw its troops from Donbass within two months, the conditions for peace talks will be made more stringent.
Ground situation and impact on civilians
The situation in Luhansk is continuously worsening. Russia carried out hundreds of drone attacks throughout the night. Two women were killed in an attack on a civilian car in the Kherson region. A fire broke out in a warehouse in Lutsk city and a cloud of smoke spread into the sky. Zelensky said that Russia fired more than three hundred drones. He sarcastically said that we had proposed a ceasefire on Easter, in response we got drone attacks.
Ukraine’s response
Ukraine is also not ready to back down. He launched a drone attack on Russia’s important Baltic Sea port Ust Luga, which could affect Russia’s crude oil exports. The situation has worsened so much that Ukraine’s drones are now reaching the borders of other countries. The discovery of drone debris in Estonia, Finland and Latvia has raised concerns across Europe. However, Ukraine said that its aim was not to target these countries.
North Korea’s involvement
The scope of this war has become more dangerous because North Korea has also openly joined it. Pyongyang has sent thousands of troops to help Russia. According to reports, approximately two thousand North Korean soldiers have been killed. North Korea is building a memorial for its fallen soldiers and preparing to bury their remains. Kim Jong Un has called it an example of patriotism. In return, Russia is providing economic aid, military technology and energy to North Korea, thereby bypassing international sanctions.
control inside russia
Russia is also increasing control in its own country. There is news that VPN services can be closed till 15th April so that people cannot escape censorship. Also, a new law has been implemented, under which the security agency has got the right to obtain the data of any organization without permission. This means that the information of common citizens and companies will now be directly available to the government. Meanwhile, a senior Russian military officer died in a plane crash, increasing the number of Russian generals killed since 2022.
