American social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp have been banned with the aim of ensuring privacy and protecting personal data from misuse. Now Russian citizens will not be able to use these apps. Crores of users of the country have been affected by this decision of the government. Regarding this restriction, the government says that this decision has been taken to keep the data safe from external threats. Along with this, it has also been announced to promote indigenous social networking sites in Russia.

Why did Russia ban American apps?

According to the information, the Putin government has completed the trial of its indigenous social networking sites and is now preparing to launch them across the country. The government claims that these local messaging and entertainment apps are much more secure than American apps. All these apps have been developed on the basis of Russia’s indigenous technology system, which citizens can use without any fear. There is less risk of data leak in these and the privacy of the users will be completely protected. The government has clarified that keeping in mind the security of the country’s citizens, the domains of American social media sites have been removed from the country’s National Domain Name System (DNS).

Which social media platforms were banned?

Let us tell you that along with WhatsApp, YouTube and Instagram, the Putin government has completely banned foreign websites like BBC, Deutsche Welle, Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty and Tor browser. Apart from this, the government has ordered Internet providers to use the ‘National Domain Name System’. This order has been issued under Russia’s ‘Sovereign Internet’ law and instructions have been given to strictly follow it. Let us tell you that in the year 2021, the Russian government had also banned the use of other DNS including Google DNS.

Apart from Russia, governments of many other countries have also banned social media platforms. Denmark, France and Australia have banned the use of social media for children under 16 years of age.
