A large rock suspected to have fallen from a construction truck tore through the roof of a 16-seat tourist van traveling from Mui Ne to Da Lat in central Vietnam, killing a 57-year-old Russian passenger and leaving another traveler severely injured on Dec. 8.

The van was passing through Dai Ninh Pass on National Highway 28 when the rock crashed onto the vehicle without warning. The injured passenger was rushed to Binh Thuan General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Police officers fanned out along the road after receiving reports but could not locate the suspected truck, which is believed to have continued driving after the incident.

Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage from the area to identify the vehicle and determine how the rock came loose.

National Highway 28B is undergoing large-scale upgrades, and Dai Ninh Pass has seen a surge in heavy trucks hauling construction materials. Locals say the steep, narrow terrain combined with intense construction traffic has made the route increasingly hazardous.
