Russia’s new ‘Orashnik’ missile deployed in Belarus, Lukashenko claims

Minsk, December 19: Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has claimed that Russia has deployed its latest nuclear-capable ballistic missile system ‘Orashnik’ in Belarus. He gave this information during a press conference, although the number of missiles or other technical details related to their deployment were not shared. Belarus has long been a close ally of Moscow. Belarus’s land was used for military operations during Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In addition, Belarus has also provided logistics support, clothing and equipment to the Russian army, although it has not directly deployed its troops into the war. Russia first used the ‘Orashnik’ missile in November 2024 at a defense industry-related base in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. Russian President Vladimir Putin had then said that the attack was carried out in response to Ukraine’s use of American and British long-range missiles on Russian territory. Putin described the missile as impossible to stop and compared its firepower to a nuclear weapon. However, many military experts are questioning these claims. The deployment of this missile in Belarus may further deepen concerns regarding regional security.
