Janaki died at the age of 88 due to age-related ailments at a private hospital in Mysuru, Karnataka on Saturday. There was a wave of mourning across the country on his death on Sunday. President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, public representatives from various states and eminent personalities from the film industry paid emotional tribute to him.

President Draupadi Murmu expressed condolences on the social media platform ‘X’ and said that S. With the demise of Janaki, India has lost a great personality of the music world. He said that in a career spanning over six decades, Janaki has enthralled generations by singing thousands of songs in about 20 Indian languages ​​including Hindi, Oriya, Tulu, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to him and said that S. Janaki’s demise is an irreparable loss to Indian music and culture. He said that her melodious voice and amazing ability to express diverse emotions will continue to inspire generations to come.

Indelible legacy of more than 48 thousand songs

Born on 23 April 1938 in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, S. Janaki recorded more than 48,000 songs in her illustrious career. He mainly lent his voice to Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films, but his songs were also extremely popular in many other Indian languages ​​including Hindi. She was fondly known as ‘Janaki Amma’ and ‘The Nightingale of South India’ among her fans.

Political and film world paid tribute

Former Chief Minister of Kerala and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Pinarayi Vijayan said that S. Janaki’s demise marks the end of the golden era of Indian cinema and music. He said that his voice resided in the heart of every Malayali and his legacy will always live on.

Actor Mohanlal described her as the “Nightingale of India”, saying that her voice gave a new identity to film music in many languages, including Malayalam. Actor Mammootty, Actress Manju Warrier, Singer G. Venugopal, M.G. Several artistes, including Sreekumar and composer M. Jayachandran, also paid tribute to him and remembered his contribution to Indian music.

Final farewell will be held with state honors

The Karnataka government has announced that S. Janaki’s last rites will be performed with full state honours. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said that arrangements have been made for the last darshan of the common people in Mysuru and the government will make further plans in collaboration with the film industry to make his memory everlasting.

He told that Janaki was honored with many prestigious honors in her life including four National Film Awards, 33 state level awards and Karnataka Rajyotsava Award.

Had refused to accept Padma Bhushan

In the year 2013 S. Janaki had refused to accept the Padma Bhushan award saying that this honor was being given to her too late. This decision of his also remained a topic of discussion for a long time.
