SA20: Potgieter, Brewis lead MI Cape Town past defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Gqeberhaग्केबरहा : MI Cape Town got off to a great start to SA20 season three by defeating defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape by 97 runs in their first match at St George's Park on Thursday. The Orange Army had come in thousands to welcome the two-time champion, but they returned home disappointed due to MICT's stellar performance.

According to the SA20 press release, Robin Pietersen's MICT team dominated in all aspects on the night and Dewald Brewis scored 57 off just 29 balls (two fours and six sixes) to take the visitors to 174/7, but Delano Potgieter and Together, Trent Boult bowled out Sunrisers for just 77 runs.

Potgieter took career-best figures of 5/10, but it was New Zealand international Boult (2/16) who set the tone with a brilliant new ball, turning the third over into a double-wicket maiden. The 35-year-old Boult showed his world-class ability to swing the new ball back towards right-handed batsmen, dismissing England's Test opener Zak Crawley (12 runs from 14 balls, two fours) at Sunrisers. Captain Aiden Markram (19 runs from 19 balls, with two fours and a six) was the top scorer for SEC. And it was fitting that Brewis played a key role in the victory, with the rising star showcasing the potential first seen in the competition's opener at Newlands two seasons ago. The 21-year-old Bolt was in excellent form from the beginning and was hitting the ball clearly. His first task was to face the double spin of Simon Harmer and Liam Dawson before hitting consecutive sixes off seamer Bearse Swanepoel.

One of Brewis' half-dozen sixes was caught with one hand in the crowd by Christopher Moolman, who became the first entrant in the Betway Catches R2 Million competition for Season 3. Although MICT lost Brewis in the last five overs, Potgieter (25 not out, 12 balls, two fours and a six) and George Linde (23 not out, 17 balls, one four and one six) made an unbroken 41-run stand. Maintained momentum by partnering.

The pair added 24 runs off the final over of Sunrisers' Marco Jensen, swinging the momentum in MICT's favour, which they never relinquished for the rest of the evening. MICT will be hoping to maintain their winning streak when they face Joburg Super Kings at Wanderers on Saturday, while Sunrisers will look to bounce back against Paarl Royals at Boland Park on Saturday.
