Now the security of Sabarimala temple will be done through AI, with crowd management, lost people will be found within minutes.

The security of the world famous Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple is now going to be hi-tech. The temple administration is going to take the help of modern science to control crowd management and security arrangements from the upcoming pilgrimage season. According to the information, Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) is considering implementing a modern ‘Pilgrim Management System’ based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the temple.

TDB Chairman K. Jayakumar gave this information after a high-level meeting with experts and senior police officers from across the country. He said that this AI initiative is part of the ‘Vision Sabarimala’ project, which has already been placed before the Kerala High Court and has also been approved by the court.

How will AI-based system work?

  • ADGP Manoj Abraham, who attended the meeting, shared the details of this technology. He told that this platform will be a combination of many modern technologies:-
  • The movement of pilgrims will be monitored through high-resolution cameras, infrared sensors, drones and GPS mapping. The system will predict the crowd even before it increases.
  • If there is going to be a jam or heavy crowd situation anywhere on the route, the AI system will immediately send alerts to the officials and suggestions to take necessary steps. It will also play the role of guide in emergency situations like heavy rain or lightning.
  • Just like Google Maps shows the route to the drivers, similarly this system will give live updates to the devotees about how much crowd is there on which route and how long they may have to wait for darshan.
  • With the advent of this technology, the dependence on deployment of large number of police forces every year will be reduced and the method of crowd management will remain the same despite the change of officers every season.

‘Facial Recognition’ will find missing people in minutes

Pathanamthitta district police chief R. Anand said that ‘facial recognition’ will be used for security and searching for missing people. If a child or an elderly person goes missing in the crowd, he will be tracked within a few minutes as soon as his photo is uploaded to this camera network. Apart from this, this technology will also help the police in identifying the suspects.

Initial process will be completed by August

According to TDB Chairman Jayakumar, final rounds of discussions are going on with the police department for this project. Soon, Request for Proposal or Expression of Interest will be issued for this. The board aims to complete all the preliminary and technical processes and allocate the work by the month of August, so that it can be launched this season.

Why is the help of AI being taken?

In recent times, many such incidents have been recorded in which many devotees died due to sudden stampede due to huge crowd in the temple. To avoid such unexpected incidents, the Sabarimala temple administration is now taking the help of modern science.

Emphasis on ‘Clean Sabarimala, Green Sabarimala’

Under ‘Vision Sabarimala’, there is a big focus not only on technology but also on cleanliness and waste management. New rules are being made with the help of Suchitva Mission. The conditions for waste management will be compulsorily included in the tender of shops and hotels located in the temple premises and on the roads. The aim is to make the entire pilgrimage site plastic-free and eco-friendly.
