More than a decade after retiring from international cricket, legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar continues to influence the next generation of Indian cricketers through mentorship and guidance.
While he is no longer part of the dressing room setup, Tendulkar remains a trusted voice for players navigating difficult phases in their careers. Recent examples involving Sanju Samson and Shubman Gill highlight the enduring impact of the former India captain on the modern team.
Tendulkar’s role in Samson’s comeback
The 2026 season proved to be a turning point for Sanju Samson, whose journey in the lead-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was filled with uncertainty.
After a disappointing series against New Zealand, Samson admitted he was mentally shattered and unsure about his future in the tournament.
“I was broken. I felt like my dreams had shattered,” Samson recalled while reflecting on that difficult phase.

India’s Test captain Shubman Gill also sought Tendulkar’s advice before embarking on a challenging Test series in England.

Before the tour, he spoke with both Tendulkar and Australian batter Steve Smith to understand how to succeed in English conditions.
“They both told me the same thing — defend straight and score square,” Gill revealed.
The guidance proved effective. Gill went on to produce an outstanding series, scoring 754 runs in Englandone of the most remarkable performances by an Indian batter in overseas conditions.
Technical and mental guidance
Tendulkar had earlier pointed out technical adjustments Gill needed to make, particularly regarding his front-foot movement and balance at the crease.
“Most batters are dismissed on the front foot,” Tendulkar had explained while emphasising the importance of playing straight and maintaining stability while facing seam bowling.
Gill’s improved footwork and disciplined shot selection during the England tour reflected those insights.
