Sairaj Pardeshi betters youth national records in Doha
Indian weightlifter Sairaj Pardeshi bettered his own youth national records in snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift categories to clinch the 81kg men’s title at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Doha, Qatar, on Monday.
The 17-year-old won one gold medal and two silver medals at the event.
Sairaj lifted 139kg in the snatch category setting a youth national record. It fetched him a silver medal. He also won the second silver medal in the clean and jerk category by lifting 171kg. It was again a youth record.
Sairaj won the gold medal with an overall lift of 310kg, setting a national youth record.
This was India’s first gold in the men’s category at this event.
Overall, India won seven gold, four silver and as many bronze medals at the event.
Iran’s Amirmohammad Rahmati won the silver medal with a total lift of 307kg (140kg snatch + 167 clean and jerk), while Saudi Arabia’s Alzawri Mohammed Ali bagged the bronze medal with a lift of 306kg (134 snatch + 172 clear and jerk)
Sairaj, who has been training at SAI’s National Centre of Excellence in Aurangabad for the past three years, had won 81kg gold in the youth section and 81kg silver in the junior section in the IWLF National Senior, Junior and Youth Championships held in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh in 2023-24.
Before that, he had won 73kg youth gold in the 2022-23 championships in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu. He had also pocketed 73kg bronze in the previous edition of the KIYG in Madhya Pradesh.
