Sydney: Acclaimed New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for portraying Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died at the age of 78. His family confirmed that the veteran actor passed away on Monday in Sydney, Australia.

The news was announced through a statement shared on Neill’s official Instagram account, which said he died peacefully while surrounded by his family.

Family confirms his passing

In its statement, the family said Neill’s death was sudden and unexpected.

“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.”

The statement added that the actor had remained cancer-free and thanked the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their care during his final days.

The family also requested privacy as they mourned their loss, saying further details would be shared at a later stage.

Born as Nigel John Dermot Sam Neill in Omagh, Northern Ireland, in 1947, Neill moved with his family to New Zealand in 1954.

He made his feature film debut in Sleeping Dogs before gaining international recognition opposite Judy Davis in My Brilliant Career.
