Samsung S26 Ultra to Feature Innovative CoE Display

Highlights

  • The Samsung S26 Ultra set to feature a Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) elevating brightness, device design, and energy efficiency
  • CoE technology significantly improves brightness, energy efficiency, and display quality compared to traditional OLEDs.
  • CoE technology enables sleeker, thinner, and more ergonomic device designs.
  • First introduced in 2021 with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, CoE technology has continued to enhance Samsung’s foldable smartphone line, including the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

With the news that the Samsung S26 Ultra is expected to be released early next year, the company has decided that its flagship product will feature its cutting-edge display technology and Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE). This novel approach aims to elevate the visual brilliance your screens can provide and enhance energy efficiency.

Introducing the Color Filter on Encapsulation

The CoE tech is used in OLED screens and makes screens brighter and more energy efficient. This is a great improvement over traditional OLED displays that utilize polarizing layers that reduce glare and reflections but also block a significant amount of light for inferior display and energy usage.

How CoE Works

The CoE tech replaces the polarizer with a color filter that uses a special black layer which is called a Pixel Define Layer (PDL). This tech allows more light to pass through the display allowing the screen to be brighter and more energy efficient. The PDL helps in reducing light reflections and improves the display quality providing a thinner and more vivid display. The replacement of the traditional polarizers which were a bulky component of OLED displays, CoE tech gives the devices a sleek design and makes it more ergonomic.

Historical Context

Samsung’s groundbreaking CoE tech made its debut in 2021, alongside the launch of its foldable smartphone: Galaxy Z Fold 3. This was an important development in foldable display technologies. Samsung further went ahead in making a thinner screen and a more efficient display with better color and brightness fidelity. The application of CoE technology in the Galaxy Z Fold 3 exemplified Samsung’s innovative spirit. It also set the bar for the display of foldable smartphones.

The success of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 meant that Samsung continued to incorporate CoE technology with its succeeding models. The Galaxy Z Fold 6, was released on July 24 last year and also featured the display tech. This consistent use of CoE tech in the foldable phones suggested the significance the company saw in its technology and encouraged Samsung to dedicate itself to improving and applying the CoE to improve display performance and efficiency across its product line.
