Sandro Tonali joins Tottenham from Newcastle in record deal

Tottenham has completed the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali in a club-record deal that could be worth up to £100 million.

The 26-year-old Italy international joins the London club after spending three seasons with Newcastle.

Spurs initially had a bid of around £80 million rejected before reaching an agreement with Newcastle. Tottenham is expected to pay an initial £92.5 million, with a further £7.5 million in potential add-ons.

“I’m very happy to be here,” Tonali said. “People said about there being four or five clubs. There was only one.

“I spoke to the head coach [Roberto De Zerbi] for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football.

“It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham. I’ve played against Tottenham a few times and always found a great atmosphere made by great fans. I can’t wait to start the season.”

Tonali becomes Tottenham’s second major midfield signing of the transfer window, following the arrival of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for £85 million.
