Sanjay Manjrekar gives final thoughts on struggling KL Rahul before 2nd Test v NZ

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has acknowledges that KL Rahul should take rest if Shubman Gill is fit to play the 2nd Test match against New Zealand. Shubman was put to rest from the 1st Test due to stiffness in his neck.

Virat Kohli batted at no. 3, though he was not successful in delivering runs in first innings. Indian team were wrapped up for 46 runs in the first innings. This was India’s first loss to New Zealand on home ground since 1988. KL Rahul, who batted in middle order for the team, made low scores of 0 and 12 as his poor run in Test cricket continued.

In a conversation with ESPNCricinfoSanjay stated that the team should keep KL Rahul out of the team if Gill is fit to play the Test in Pune. He also said that if Gill is not fit, Virat should play at no.4 as he should not be given a place where he has not made big numbers.

Sanjay also suggested that in order to ‘free him up a bit’, KL to be shifted to number three if Gill is not present to play.

Yes. I think that could be the call the team management will take if Gill is not fit. It is a little unfair for somebody like Virat to keep batting at number three. Maybe because KL is looking so lost (in the middle-order), maybe push him to number three and just free up a little bit and let Virat play at number four,” said Manjrekar.
