Sanjay Manjrekar Verdict on Vaibhav Suryavanshi IPL 2026
Batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has piled up numbers too loud to ignore, says ex-India player Sanjay Manjrekar. Though his explosive style in short formats turns heads, a spot in the red-ball setup could wait – there are others ahead. Talking with Sportstar, Manjrekar pointed out how the young hitter blazed through IPL games, scoring 404 runs across ten outings, averaging 40.4. Because of such returns, whispers about T20I entry grow harder to brush aside. Yet patience may still be needed when it comes to Tests, given the queue of ready top-order names. His fire in white uniforms shows promise, just not instant passage everywhere. Numbers like these, though, tend to shift conversations fast. Timing matters, even if talent doesn’t hide. For now, eyes stay fixed on what he does next. That kind of run flow changes minds quicker than expected.
“Looking at IPL as a platform to stake a claim for the Indian T20 team and keeping an eye on his performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as well, where he has a hundred [vs Maharashtra]I think he has done enough,” said Manjrekar.
“If someone is lighting up this stage like this, then he (Sooryavanshi) is ready. He might be ready, but are the others ready to make way? Because there is a huge crowd for the opening slots in India,” he added.
Out on the edge, Manjrekar pointed out how Sooryavanshi belongs to a fresh wave of bold hitters unafraid to shift position for better stroke play. Still, switching gears from player to analyst, he stressed such tactics could stumble when facing longer formats.
“Take consistent T20 batters in recent years, Sooryavanshi stays leg side and hits a ball on middle stump through point because he creates that room. In Tests, the advice is to get close to the ball,” he said.
Falling short by only six big hits, Sooryavanshi edges closer to breaking Abhishek Sharma’s tally of maximum sixes by an Indian in one IPL season.
That big six-hitting mark might come true for Sooryavanshi when his team faced Gujarat Titans over the weekend. Holding the current title for most sixes hit by an Indian player in one IPL season is Abhishek, whose 2024 campaign included 42 towering clears along with 36 boundary doubles.
