Sanju Samson breaks MS Dhoni’s record, creates history with first century for CSK
In IPL 2026, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson made a spectacular comeback and scored a historic century. In the match played against Delhi Capitals, Samson completed his first IPL century in just 52 balls in CSK jersey. This was not only a special moment in his IPL career, but it also became his first century of this season. Samson accomplished this feat in the 18th match of IPL 2026. Which was played at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. With this century, Samson has also broken MS Dhoni’s record.
Sanju Samson, who joined CSK after being traded from Rajasthan Royals, had a disappointing start this season. He scored 6, 7 and 9 runs respectively in the first three matches. However, there were huge expectations from him after his brilliant performance in the T20 World Cup 2026 and in this match he proved those expectations right.

Dhoni’s 5 year old record destroyed
With this historic innings, Sanju Samson has become the first wicketkeeper-batsman to score a century for CSK in IPL history. Earlier, the highest score made by any wicketkeeper of CSK was in the name of MS Dhoni. Who played an inning of 84 runs against RCB in 2019. Sanju has now become the wicketkeeper who has played the biggest innings for Chennai by surpassing Dhoni. Additionally, he has also become the only batsman to score centuries for three different IPL franchises.
Giants equal in the list of most centuries
This is the fourth century of Sanju Samson’s IPL career. With this, he has equaled Gujarat Titans captain Shubhman Gill, Shane Watson and David Warner in terms of most centuries. The record of scoring most centuries in IPL is in the name of Virat Kohli (8), followed by Jos Buttler (7) and Chris Gayle (6). Sanju has now joined the list of select 9 batsmen from Chennai who have scored a century wearing the yellow jersey in IPL.

What did Samson say about his return?
After the match, Sanju Samson said that he had a lot of doubts in his mind after failing in the first three matches. He told that he trusted his basics and focused on playing his natural game. Samson said, ‘Many questions come to mind after bad innings but I maintained faith in myself and tried to play only what works for me.’ This brilliant innings of Samson gave strength to CSK and showed that big players prove their true ability only in difficult times.
