Sanju Samson credits Sachin Tendulkar’s guidance after winning Player of the Series in India’s T20 World Cup triumph

India’s emphatic victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand brought several standout performances, but it was Sanju Samson who emerged as one of the biggest heroes of the tournament. The wicketkeeper-batter was named Player of the Series after a consistent campaign that included three half-centuries, helping India dominate throughout the tournament.

Speaking after the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Samson described the moment as surreal and emotionally overwhelming. “Feels like a dream. Very happy and grateful. Out of words, out of emotions,” he said while reflecting on the journey that led him to this milestone.

The Indian batter revealed that his breakthrough campaign was years in the making. Samson admitted that he began visualising this success even before the tournament, particularly during the difficult phase when he was part of India’s squad in the 2024 World Cup but did not get an opportunity to play.

According to Samson, that period became a turning point in shaping his mindset. Instead of being discouraged, he focused on preparation and mental conditioning, imagining himself performing on the biggest stage. “To be honest, it started one-two years before. When I was in the 2024 World Cup team where I didn’t play, I kept visualising and kept working. This was exactly what I wanted to do,” he explained.

The road was far from smooth. Samson recalled a particularly challenging moment following India’s series against New Zealand, where he felt his ambitions had taken a severe hit. “After the NZ series I was broken, my dreams were completely shattered. I was thinking what can I do. But God had different plans. I was rewarded for being brave enough to dream,” he said.

A key factor behind his resurgence, Samson revealed, was the guidance he received from legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. The young batter shared that he had been in regular contact with the cricket icon in recent months, seeking advice on both his game and mindset.

“For the last couple of months, I have been in constant contact with Sachin sir. I reached out to him and had big conversations with him,” Samson said, highlighting how valuable the mentorship was during his preparation for the tournament.

Receiving guidance from one of the greatest batters in cricket history proved invaluable for the Kerala cricketer. Samson said the experience of learning directly from Tendulkar helped him stay confident and focused during crucial moments in the competition. “Getting guidance from someone like him, what more can you ask for?” he added.

Samson also acknowledged the support he received from several former players who encouraged him during challenging phases. Their advice and belief, he said, played a significant role in helping him rediscover his confidence and perform at his best on the global stage.

Despite achieving one of the biggest honours of his career, Samson said he intends to savour the moment before thinking about future goals. “This itself is very big for me. I want to enjoy it right now and then after a few days will figure out what more to do,” he concluded.

India eventually sealed the title in dominant fashion, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs after posting 255/5, with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah earning Player of the Match honours in the final. However, Samson’s consistency throughout the tournament ensured he walked away with the Player of the Series award, marking a defining chapter in his international career.
