Sanju Samson shares an incident where he failed to make eye contact with coach head coach Gautam Gambhir

Sanju Samson hasn’t been consistent despite the number of chances he received in international cricket. He has a massive fan following who always demanded regular playing time for the right-handed batter. However, he couldn’t justify their faith and failed to gain the trust of the coach and captain.

He was lucky that his long-time admirer, Gautam Gambhir, was appointed the head coach of the Men in Blue. The veteran once said that Samson deserves a permanent spot in the national team. Samson recently narrated an incident in which he didn’t score runs and didn’t have the guts to make eye contact with coach Gambhir.

“The relationship between a player and the coach is important. When he backs you, it becomes your duty to perform. I wanted to make him happy for all the chances he gave me.

“When I was dismissed with making a big contribution in one of the matches, I tried to avoid making an eye contact with him. When I hit a century, I saw Gauti bhai clapping for me and it made me happy,” Samson told journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel.

Samson registered two consecutive ducks in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka but was retained in the team for the Bangladesh series. In the first two matches, he managed  29 and 10, respectively. He struck a 40-ball hundred in the third and final contest to take India’s score to 297 in Hyderabad.

“I was under pressure as I didn’t had a good series against Sri Lanka. The two games against Bangaldesh were also not good. I was thinking about my future with the Indian team,” he added.

The Rajasthan Royals skipper pointed out that he kept his emotions under control in the third game.

“The pressure can impact you negatively but I know how to handle it. It comes through experience. My focus was on the controllables.”

Samson will now play in the T20I series against South Africa.
