Seamless Transactions: NPCI to Enable Offline Tap-and-Pay UPI Payments Up to ₹2,000:
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is expanding India’s digital payment infrastructure by developing an offline tap-and-pay system for Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This technology enables consumers and merchants to execute instant transactions without active internet connectivity on either device. Powered by Near Field Communication (NFC), the feature builds on the earlier ‘UPI Lite X’ innovation to integrate tap-to-pay capabilities into point-of-sale (PoS) terminals.
Key Technical Aspects of Offline UPI
The offline payment mechanism eliminates reliance on real-time mobile networks, addressing network coverage dead zones in high-density transit hubs, aircraft cabins, and remote geographical regions.
Feature Architecture: NPCI Offline Tap-and-Pay UPI
Core Technology : Near Field Communication (NFC)
Transaction Limit : Up to ₹2,000 per payment
Wallet Pre-loader : On-device UPI Lite wallet
Authentication : No UPI PIN required during payment
Target Terminals : NPCI-certified merchant PoS machines
Operational Workflow and Security Protocol
The transaction process relies on pre-loaded digital wallets and delayed verification synchronisation:
Pre-loading Funds: Users fund their on-device UPI Lite balance while connected to an internet network.
Contactless Execution: At the payment counter, tapping the NFC-enabled phone against an NPCI-certified PoS terminal completes the payment instantly without requiring a PIN.
Local Storage & Sync: The offline PoS machine securely logs the transaction authorisation locally and transmits the settlement data automatically to banking networks once connectivity is restored.
By certifying major terminal manufacturers for offline capability, NPCI aims to connect traditional credit/debit card chip technology with instant real-time digital payment networks.
