Security tightened regarding Tazia procession on Muharram in Delhi, surveillance through drones; More than 2000 policemen will be deployed
New Delhi. Delhi Police has made strict security arrangements for the Tazia procession to be taken out on Friday on the occasion of Muharram. This time the police will monitor through drones to maintain law and order. Officials informed on Wednesday that technology will be used to monitor suspicious activities and crowd management during the procession. Especially in North-East Delhi and North Delhi, extra vigilance will be taken regarding security arrangements. According to the police, more than 2 thousand policemen will be deployed during the procession, so that any untoward incident can be prevented and the event can be conducted peacefully.
The 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is celebrated as ‘Ashura’. On this day, Tajiya processions are taken out in different parts of the country in the memory of Imam Hussain. According to history, in 680 AD, Prophet Mohammed’s grandson Imam Hussain and many of his close companions were martyred on this day in Karbala, Iraq. This event is considered an important and emotional chapter in Islamic history, remembered as a symbol of justice and sacrifice. This year ‘Ashura’ is being celebrated on Friday.
Extensive security arrangements for Tajiya procession
Delhi Police has made extensive security arrangements in the capital. According to police officials, processions are taken out in many areas of Delhi, but big processions are mainly held in North-East Delhi and Old Delhi areas. Keeping these sensitive areas in mind, the police have deployed additional security forces and have prepared a special plan to maintain law and order. Officials said that meetings have also been held with local eminent people and Aman Committee members to ensure peaceful conduct of the procession. The objective of these meetings is to maintain mutual coordination and avoid any untoward situation.
1100 policemen and drones-surveillance with facial recognition
North-East Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rahul Alwal said that around 1100 local police personnel will be deployed during the procession in the area. Along with this, 20 companies of security forces have been demanded from the police headquarters. He said that 14 drones would be used to keep an eye on the crowd, so that real-time monitoring of the procession activities could be done. Apart from this, facial recognition technology will also be used to identify criminal or suspicious elements.
North Delhi DCP Raja Banthia said that adequate number of drones, photographers and videographers will be deployed for surveillance during the procession. Along with this, facial recognition technology will also be used to keep an eye on suspicious activities. He informed that 5 Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), 37 Inspectors and 924 other policemen will be deployed under the security arrangements in North Delhi. Apart from this, two companies from other units of Delhi Police and one company from outside force will also be deployed for security duty.
Meetings held with members of the peace committee
Officials said the system has been strengthened in sensitive areas through additional police forces, technical surveillance and local coordination. North Delhi DCP Raja Banthia said that meetings have been held with the members of the Aman Committee at the police station and district levels and they have been requested to ensure that the processions are conducted peacefully. He said that adequate number of reserve police personnel will be deployed in all the police stations so that immediate action can be taken in any situation. At the same time, according to North-East Delhi DCP Rahul Alwal, barricading will be done in sensitive areas and additional forces equipped with riot control equipment along with Quick Action Team (QRT) will also be deployed. Along with this, volunteers will also be included in the system to help in crowd management.
21 meetings from police station to DCP level
North-East Delhi DCP Rahul Alwal said that a total of 21 meetings have been held from the police station level to the DCP level with peace committees, brotherhood committees, cable operators and eminent people of the area to carry out the procession smoothly. The objective of these meetings is to ensure peace and mutual cooperation during the procession. At the same time, Parvez Noor, chief patron of ‘Anjuman Tajiyadaran’, the organization that organizes the Tajiya procession, told the media that coordination meetings have been held with the police in Central Delhi and volunteers from the organization will be deployed with every Tajiya. He said that the volunteers will assist the police in maintaining order during the procession.
Ashura procession will start at 3 pm
Parvez Noor, chief patron of the organizing committee ‘Anjuman Tajiyadaran’, said that this time the procession will be taken out after Friday prayers at 3 pm. He told that about 10 volunteers are deployed with one Tajiya and this time around 50 to 60 Tajiyas will participate in the procession. Since Ashura falls on Friday, the procession will be taken out after the prayers. According to Parvez Noor, the procession will proceed through two different routes. One procession will start from Jama Masjid and go towards Ajmeri Gate, while the other procession will start from Beri Wale Bagh near Pul Bangash and reach Paharganj via Qutub Road. He told that later both the processions will move together towards the local Karbala in Jor Bagh, where the procession will conclude.
Another police officer said that adequate number of police forces will be deployed to maintain law and order during the procession and special surveillance will be kept on sensitive areas. According to the official, meetings have also been held with Aman Committee members regarding the Tajiya procession in East Delhi, Shahdara and North-West Delhi. The objective of these meetings is to increase coordination at the local level and prevent any kind of disorder during the procession.
