Varanasi, 2 January. The 72nd Senior National Volleyball Championship has been organized from January 4 (Sunday) at Dr. Sampurnanand Sports Complex, Varanasi. This is the first time that the religious city is hosting a national level volleyball competition. More than 1250 players, coaches and technical officials from a total of 73 teams in men’s and women’s categories will participate in this eight-day championship.
PM Modi will do virtual inauguration, CM Yogi will be present
Varanasi’s popular MP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the competition while Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will personally be present and encourage the players. Uttar Pradesh Volleyball Association President and Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak will be present as a special guest at the inauguration ceremony. Along with him, many senior leaders of the state government and organization will also participate in the program.
Niranjar Rai appointed manager of UP men’s team
Meanwhile, on Friday, both the teams (men’s and women’s) of host UP were declared. Organizing Secretary Sarvesh Pandey said that the selectors Niranjan Kumar Rai and Pooja Yadav finalized the selection of the teams at Sigra Sports Complex. Former national player Niranjan Rai, resident of Ballia, has been given the responsibility of manager of the men’s team.
UP men’s team: Suryansh Tomar (UP Police), Puneet (SSB), Kush Singh (UP Police), Aditya Rana (Saharanpur), Rupesh (Ghazipur), Abhishek Mishra (Varanasi), Mohd. Saeed (Azamgarh), Shreyansh Singh (UP Police), Aman Halder (Pilibhit), Rajneesh Singh (Azamgarh), Nayyab Chaudhary (Muzaffarnagar), Abdul Sameer Khan (Pilibhit), Prithviraj Singh (Rae Bareli) and Shakti Singh (Gorakhpur).
UP women’s team: Agrima Tripathi (UP Police), Arya Das E. and Jyoti (both SSB), Khushboo Gupta (UP Police), Kajal Devi (SSBS), Priyanka and Isha (both UP Police), CH Rajita (SSB), Shreya Tripathi (Prayagraj), Mainawati and Tanisha Phogat (both UP Police), Neetu (SSB), Janhvi Singh (Sultanpur) and Shaili (UP Police).
For the first time in UP Matches will be played on 2 Tufflex courts
On the other hand, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mayor Ashok Tiwari said that for the first time in Uttar Pradesh, matches will be played on two Tufflex courts in any volleyball competition. Toflex court items have been procured from Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. All matches will be played in outdoor and indoor halls at Sigra Stadium.

Interestingly, Mayor Ashok Tiwari himself is monitoring the preparations. On Friday, he called a meeting of councilors and BJP workers and reviewed the event and assigned different responsibilities to everyone. During this, senior officials of the district, municipal corporation and police administration including District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar, Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal and Police Commissioner Mohit Aggarwal inspected the stadium and event venues and took stock of the arrangements.
Preparation to make the event grand
The stadium is being given an unprecedented look in coordination with the organizing committee and administration. Special attention is being paid to all aspects including spectator facilities, security arrangements, players’ accommodation and transportation. This event is a matter of pride not only for the sports world but also for Kashi. Varanasi is expected to get sports tourism and national identity from this national level championship.
