SGPC Chief Dhami Undergoes Religious Punishment for Making Derogatory Remarks Against Predecessor | Read
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami faced religious consequences on Wednesday as directed by the Panj Pyare (Five Beloveds) for using inappropriate language towards his predecessor, Bibi Jagir Kaur.
The Panj Pyare mandated that Dhami perform voluntary service (Seva) and offer prayers as a form of atonement. Specifically, he is to engage in one hour of service at the shoe storage area (Joda Ghar) and another hour cleaning utensils in the langar hall, in addition to reciting the Panj Japji Sahib path.
Dhami met with the Akal Takht Jathedar for approximately fifteen minutes within the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar and subsequently presented himself to the Panj Pyare, who announced his punishment. Dhami accepted their guidance and carried out his religious sentence.
This directive was issued in response to a complaint received by the Panj Pyare, accusing Dhami of using derogatory language against Bibi Jagir Kaur, a former SGPC president. It serves as a reminder to Sikh leaders and the broader community about the significance of humility, respect, and adherence to Sikh values.
Prior to this, Dhami had expressed regret for his remarks and submitted an apology letter to the Akal Takht. Recently, he also appeared before the Punjab State Commission for Women to apologize for his reported derogatory comments about Jagir Kaur, but the commission declined to accept it.
Punjab State Women Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill later affirmed that the commission took suo-motu notice of an audio recording circulating on social media, where Dhami allegedly used offensive and disrespectful language during a phone call with a media representative. Following this, Kaur appeared before the commission and requested that Dhami be subject to legal action for his admission of fault regarding his remarks.
